Hello Renewables.

What’s Your Story?

Why do we need long duration energy storage (LDES) solutions?

We need to solve the energy storage problem. Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) will be critical in reaching net zero targets. Renewable energy sources like wind and solar are not always reliable - the sun doesn’t always shine and the wind doesn’t always blow and existing technologies can only store energy for a few hours. We need new, deeper storage technologies to store energy over time. LDES solutions will deliver dispatchable and reliable renewable energy when it’s needed, not just when it’s generated.

LAVO has the answer. Our patent pending metal hydride will provide groundbreaking long duration storage. We will combine this with a fuel cell and electrolyser to create the integrated Hydrogen Energy Storage System (HESS).

Green hydrogen LDES solutions - like LAVO’s - will be key to accelerating the adoption of green hydrogen as an energy source.

Why use augmented intelligence in a digital platform?

LAVO is well-positioned to respond to rising pressures from customers for accessible, safe, and scalable green fuel storage solutions to support energy transition targets.

To optimise the operation of LDES products, customers need access to consistent, real-time information. We have developed LAVO FRANC, an integrated, digital platform that ensures the effective and efficient management of energy generation, storage, and dispatch. This optimises performance and enables customers to maximise their investment.

What is hydrogen?

Hydrogen is the most abundant element, accounting for approximately 90 per cent of all atoms in the universe and the majority of the sun’s mass. On earth, hydrogen is found naturally in water (H2O) and other organic compounds.

Hydrogen is virtually limitless - some things really do last forever.

Why hydrogen?

Hydrogen is an incredible fuel source that can be used to power engines, generate heat, or be converted into electricity through the use of fuel cell technology. It can be used where it is produced, or stored and transported elsewhere.

Hydrogen is a perfect carrier of energy, and is unique among liquid and gaseous fuels because it emits absolutely no carbon dioxide (CO2) when burned.

Why green hydrogen?

Without green hydrogen, there is no net zero future. Green hydrogen is seen as a critical enabler of the energy transition, with forecasts that up to one-quarter of the world’s future energy needs will be met by this molecule.

How is green hydrogen produced?

Green hydrogen is produced through the process of electrolysis, where an electrical current is run through water to split it into oxygen and hydrogen. The electrical current is generated from renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, or even hydroelectricity.

Through electrolysis, a single litre of water can produce 13.3 Megajoules of energy, which can be converted to over 2,000 watt-hours of useful electricity. The water used for this process can be rainwater, grey water, drinkable water, or even desalinated seawater. Living on the blue planet, hydrogen is very accessible - a whole economy based on green hydrogen would still use less drinking water than the fossil fuel industry today.

There are a range of LDES methods. At LAVO, we use our patented metal hydride technology, which locks the hydrogen in solid materials. This is a reliable and well-established technology used to store hydrogen at low pressure, providing a safer alternative to high compression or liquified storage. Our innovative hydride reactor vessel creates hydrogen to power the next generation of renewable products and energy generation.

How Do We Make it Happen?

The storage dilemma

Renewable energy sources like wind and solar are not always reliable - the sun doesn’t always shine and the wind doesn’t always blow and existing technologies can only store energy for a few hours.

We need new, deeper storage technologies to store energy over time.

With existing battery technology alone is inadequate for long-duration storage due to its low energy density, shallow storage capacity, and short life cycles, LDES solutions are expected to be critical in reaching net zero targets.

Developing a green hydrogen LDES solution as a complementary component will be key to accelerating the adoption of green hydrogen as an energy source for either molecular or electron applications.

Unlocking the potential of renewables.

At LAVO, we are dedicated to doing our bit through practical applications to generate renewable energy for a greener today and tomorrow. LAVO’s innovative product suite combines LDES with an intelligent digital platform, bringing efficiency to the management of what has to date been a decentralised platform.

LAVO’s proprietary metal hydride provides ground-breaking long duration storage capabilities, which are combined with a fuel cell and electrolyser to create an integrated solution. When coupled with the flexibility of a li-ion battery or other short duration storage technology, a full-service solution is provided with short-long term storage capabilities.

LAVO is also developing cost-effective, accessible solutions for industrial applications that leverage existing infrastructure.
